Cdr Abhilash Tomy became the first Asian skipper to finish podium at the 2022 Golden Globe Race. 

Decorated with the Kirti Chakra and Nausena Medal, he is also the first Indian to achieve a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe under sail.

He bought a Rustler 36 in France, and named it ‘Bayanat’ for the Golden Globe Race.

The sailor had a diverse career in the Navy, and is also a qualified maritime reconnaissance pilot, specialising in the Dornier 228 aircraft.

He is currently working with ISRO on its manned space mission, Gaganyaan, advising on recovery of astronauts at sea.
