I’ve had a gala time at the university. The combination of academic rigour, vibrant campus life, new friendships and the excitement of living in London has made this journey truly unforgettable,” she tells Global Indian. “The lectures have been fantastic; the professors are not only knowledgeable but also passionate about their subjects, which makes learning all the more engaging. I’ve had the opportunity to explore a variety of new modules that have broadened my understanding of law and provided different perspectives on the legal field. This multifarious learning has been invaluable for my personal and professional growth,” she mentions.

Why did you choose to study at the Queen Mary University of London?
I chose Queen Mary University of London for several compelling reasons that have only been reinforced since I started my studies here. Firstly, the module options available in my program were extensive and aligned perfectly with my academic interests and career goals. The ability to tailor my education through various elective modules provided an assurance that I will gain a well-rounded and in-depth understanding of my field.

Its ranking among the top universities in the UK gave me a sense of assurance that the quality of education would be great which would enhance the credibility of the degree in the job market. Another key factor was that the law campus is located in the heart of Central London. What have you pursued at QMUL?
I have pursued an LLM in Intellectual Property Law, focusing specifically on modules such as Fashion Law, Film and Music Law, and the intersection of IP with the Creative Industries. This program allowed me to explore the dynamic relationship between intellectual property and various creative fields, which was insightful.
Queen Mary University of London is renowned for its strong emphasis on IP law, and my experiences here have confirmed that reputation. I had the opportunity to engage with exciting and innovative modules that not only deepened my understanding of the legal frameworks but also provided practical insights into the industries themselves.
The learning environment was both stimulating and enjoyable, allowing me to connect with my peers who shared similar interests. How was settling in a new place for you?
Settling into a new place is always a mix of emotions, and for me, it was an experience that was both fun and exciting as well as a bit nerve-wracking. Moving to London as a scholar meant stepping into a vibrant and diverse city filled with new opportunities. Initially, I felt a little nervous and inhibited. Navigating a new city with its complex routes was quite daunting. I frequently found myself getting lost while trying to figure out the best ways to get to my classes. However, I also embraced the excitement of discovering new places and the thrill of travel—every turning point would lead to a hidden gem.
The cultural shift introduced me to a variety of lifestyles and traditions. Learning to cope with the differences was both challenging and rewarding. I was introduced to new cuisines which I really enjoyed experimenting with in the kitchen. Although at first, I missed the comfort of my familiar meals, eventually I started enjoying different tastes and the meals of London. Meeting new people was another aspect I found both exhilarating and slightly intimidating. Every interaction opened doors to new perspectives and friendships, but there was also that initial awkwardness of making connections in unfamiliar social settings.
The unpredictable weather in London was something I had to adapt to as well! One day the sun would shine, and the next day, I’d be caught in the rain. It took some time, but I eventually learned to always carry an umbrella and dress in layers. Over time, I developed a routine that helped me balance my studies, my social life, and my new adventures. I learned how to navigate the city’s transport system effectively, which opened up so many more opportunities for exploration. The thrill of jumping on a tube and suddenly being in a completely different part of the city became second nature to me.

As I adjusted to my new life, I fell in love with London. The vibrant atmosphere, the rich history, and the incredible diversity of cultures made the city feel like home. I cherish the memories I’ve created here, from exploring iconic landmarks to simply enjoying a cup of coffee in one of its many charming cafes. Ultimately, the journey of settling in taught me a lot about resilience and adaptability, and I’m grateful for all the experiences it brought my way.
What have you enjoyed the most at the university and in the new place?
It’s hard to pinpoint a single aspect. From the very start, I found my classes to be incredibly interactive, which made learning not just enjoyable but also engaging. I loved the dynamic discussions and the chance to dive deep into various topics with my classmates. One highlight was, under the guidance of Prof Johanna Gibson, our presentation for the Fashion Enterprise module. It was exciting to dive into the world of fashion, collaborating with classmates to create a compelling presentation that showcased our creativity and understanding of the industry. Not only did it help me build my confidence in public speaking, but it also fostered a sense of camaraderie with my peers as we worked together towards a common goal.
Additionally, the trip to the Cumberland Lodge during my first week was an unforgettable experience. It provided the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow students outside of the classroom. Exploring the beautiful scenery, engaging in team-building activities, and enjoying the local culture allowed me to form friendships that have continued to enrich my university experience. The combination of these academic and social experiences has made my transition into university life both enjoyable and fulfilling.
Meeting new people has definitely been a highlight for me. I’ve made some lifelong friends who share my interests and passions, and it’s been amazing to bond over shared experiences. We’ve spent plenty of time hanging out in the new cafes around campus, discovering cozy spots to relax and catch up.
Another favourite aspect has been taking long walks outdoors, especially in the lovely weather. It’s a great way to unwind and take in the beauty of the surroundings. Shopping at the new outlets has also been a fun adventure, exploring local shops and finding unique items.
Group studies have been incredibly helpful, too. I enjoy brainstorming and working together on projects, and of course, the coffee breaks that accompany them have added a nice social element. The trips I took with my friends have created some of my favourite memories, filled with laughter and exploration. Experiencing the magical Christmas decorations around the city added a festive sparkle, and celebrating my birthday on Christmas made it all the more special. Watching the London Eye fireworks during the New Year was surreal. The vibes during that time were something else, something that truly can’t be explained in words. Each of these experiences has contributed to an unforgettable chapter of my life.

How did you manage your expenses?
During my time as a student, I was fortunate to have my tuition fees covered by my family. For my other expenses, I adopted a strategic approach to managing my budget. I took advantage of various student discounts available to me, which helped reduce costs on items I frequently bought.
Additionally, I made railcards to save on transportation, which was particularly useful for traveling between home and university or for visiting friends. When it came to grocery shopping, I signed up for club cards at major stores like Tesco and Sainsbury’s. This allowed me to accumulate points and access exclusive discounts, ensuring I maximize my savings while purchasing essentials. By being proactive and resourceful, I managed to keep my expenses under control and focused on my studies without financial stress.
Did you engage in extracurricular activities?
Absolutely, I did engage in extracurricular activities! While pursuing my LLM degree kept me incredibly busy, I made sure to carve out time for social engagements and personal interests. I often stepped out with friends and attended various legal events, which not only expanded my professional network but also enriched my understanding of current legal trends.
In my free time, I also enjoyed planning trips with friends to explore the city, which provided a refreshing break from my studies. Additionally, my friends and I took the initiative to create an Instagram page – Instagram_lsv_ipfied, dedicated to sharing content related to intellectual property law. This project kept us engaged and allowed us to delve deeper into a subject we are passionate about while also fostering our creativity. On top of that, I’ve been involved in digital art, which is another way I express myself and unwind. Balancing these activities alongside my academic commitments has been fulfilling and has added to my overall experience during my LLM studies.
What has been most challenging while studying in a foreign land?
One of the most significant challenges I faced was adapting to the study curriculum, which was markedly different from what I experienced in India.
In India, the educational approach often emphasized theoretical knowledge, while here, the curriculum is far more practical. This shift required me to make changes in my learning style and develop a new perspective on problem-solving. Initially, it was overwhelming to navigate through this new way of thinking, as I had to move away from rote memorization and embrace critical analysis and hands-on experiences.
However, this challenge transformed into an opportunity for growth. The practical orientation of the courses encouraged me to engage more deeply with the material and collaborate with classmates on real-world projects. It opened new horizons of thinking that I hadn’t encountered before, enhancing my ability to apply concepts to actual situations. As a result, I’ve not only gained valuable knowledge but also developed skills that will be crucial for my future career. Overall, while adapting to these differences was challenging, it ultimately enriched my educational journey and helped me grow both academically and personally.

How do you look at the future after passing out?
After passing out, I am optimistic and excited about the future as I pursue my passion for trade mark law. I have always been deeply interested in the intricacies of intellectual property and the role trademarks play in protecting brands and fostering innovation. This enthusiasm has motivated me to focus my career in this specialized field.
My immediate goal is to secure a trainee trade mark attorney contract, which will provide me with invaluable hands-on experience and insight into the workings of trade mark law. This foundational stage is crucial for my development, as it will help me build the necessary skills and knowledge required to excel in this area.
Ultimately, I aspire to become a licensed trade mark attorney, where I can contribute to helping businesses protect their intellectual property rights. I believe that with dedication, continuous learning, and practical experience, I can carve out a successful career in trade mark law. I am excited about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as I embark on this journey.
