Yaggesh Sharma has been living and studying in South Korea since August 2023. “I have had a great time discovering South Korea’s stunning scenery, energetic cities, and the unique fusion of technology and culture,” he tells Global Indian. “With its varied seasons, the weather here only serves to enhance its allure, particularly in the spring and fall when the nation’s natural beauty is at its peak,” he adds. Before moving to South Korea, Yaggesh Sharma was not familiar with the Korean language. However, after arriving, he found numerous weekend classes available for learning the basics of Korean, and joined one such class. Learning the language helped him adapt to the new country well. He even chose to stay in South Korea during the vacation period to explore the country more thoroughly. “My vacation became absolutely unforgettable by the welcoming locals and the opportunity to visit ancient sites, coastal areas, and mountains. All things considered, South Korea offers the perfect blend of exciting opportunities to explore a foreign culture and a serene environment conducive to academic pursuits,” he remarks. What do you like about the Kyung Hee International Campus?
This is a great location for conducting advanced research because it houses the majority of engineering laboratories and research facilities. With its cutting-edge facilities and diverse researcher community, the campus offers an outstanding setting for academic collaboration and study. I can easily access specialist resources at the Suwon campus, which is extremely helpful for my groundwater management and civil engineering coursework.
How has life been at the university since you got there?

How was settling in a new place for you?
Due to barriers of language and culture, my first few weeks of adjustment were a little challenging, but I rapidly adapted thanks to the supportive resources offered by the institution and the welcoming community. I even made efforts to learn the language through Korean language classes. Indian Students and Researchers in Korea (ISRK) and Indians in Korea (IIK) are two active Indian community groups in Korea that host get-togethers and celebrate festivals. For Indian students, these clubs have provided an excellent support network, facilitating their adjustment and sense of belonging. Meeting people from my own country at cultural events not only helped me overcome my initial culture shock and language barrier but also made adjusting to life in Korea easier and more enjoyable.
How do you manage your finances?
My professor’s project fund provides a monthly salary, which I combine with the Kyung Hee University President Scholarship that I receive to cover my tuition and administrative fees. This financial support greatly lessens my financial stress, allowing me to concentrate on my academics and research. Living here is relatively affordable, and I feel encouraged in my academic endeavors because the institution offers numerous financial options for overseas students, such as the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS).
Please provide a brief outline of your research topic.
My area of research is groundwater resource management, which is an important discipline considering the growing need to efficiently manage water supplies for agriculture and daily use. Since groundwater is essential to the survival of many societies, its management and control are imperative. I analyze groundwater levels, assess recharge patterns, and project future trends using machine learning algorithms in conjunction with GIS and remote sensing techniques. My objective is to identify potential issues such as data-driven problems or depletion by combining advanced computer methods with geographical data analysis. In addition to improving our understanding of groundwater dynamics, this research provides information that can help guide policymakers and support globally sustainable water management practices.

Do you engage in extracurricular activities?
Yes, I participate in a range of extracurricular activities that enhance my university experience. Attending seminars and workshops in my field, in addition to broadening my academic knowledge, helps me stay current on groundwater management trends and research. Additionally, I engage in student organizations that promote environmental sustainability and civil engineering, providing a forum for networking and collaboration among like-minded peers. I also participate in the university’s cultural exchange activities, which allow me to connect with other international students from diverse backgrounds. These pursuits not only offer a welcome diversion from the demands of study but also promote interpersonal relationships and cross-cultural understanding.
How do you manage your research along with other engagements like internships?
Effective time management and prioritization are key components of balancing my study and my internship at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). My current project, which is related to my PhD program, focuses on pond water level and recharge estimation in the Ramganga River Basin. I schedule my work in advance, setting aside specific times for my internship and research responsibilities. This balance is supported by Kyung Hee University’s organized atmosphere, which also offers opportunities for international exposure, enhancing my practical experience. Overall, the amalgamation of theoretical and experiential learning enriches my growth in the field of groundwater management.
How do you view the future after the completion of your PhD?
After completing my doctoral studies, I hope to work as a sustainable groundwater management researcher. My objective is to utilize my expertise and skills to tackle urgent water resource issues that communities face. I aim to develop innovative solutions that support environmental sustainability by collaborating with government and local organizations. My goal is to ensure that communities have access to reliable and clean water sources by empowering them through research and education. Ultimately, I want to contribute to a more sustainable future and have a significant impact on society.
