This Diwali, Abhishek Lodha, MD and CEO of Lodha Group, announced transfer of a substantial portion of the Lodha family’s shares in Macrotech Developers Ltd. (MDL) to the Lodha Philanthropy Foundation (LPF). The ₹ 20,000 crore (USD 2.5 billion) donation stands as one of the largest private contributions toward social and national causes.
With the Lodha Philanthropy Foundation (LPF) now holding a one-fifth ownership stake in Macrotech Developers, the foundation’s assets and dividends will support initiatives focused on women, children, the environment, and promotion of Indian culture. Inspired by historical philanthropic examples like the Tata family’s support for Tata Trusts, Abhishek Lodha aims to impact India significantly through LPF, aligning with the nation’s development goals for 2047.
“About 100 years ago, the Tata family gave a major part of their shareholding in their enterprise to the Tata Trusts. The huge impact of this gift on India and the good work by the Tata Trusts has been a major inspiration for me.” – Abhishek Lodha
LPF’s projects are diverse, ranging from women’s economic empowerment with Lodha Unnati, mathematical excellence through the Institute of Applied Mathematics, and the Lodha Genius Programme, which supports gifted children. Additionally, the Justice Gumanmal Lodha Scholars Program provides substantial scholarships for international study, with Harvard University as an initial partner.
In sustainability, LPF collaborates with the Rocky Mountain Institute, a United States based think tank to drive net-zero carbon initiatives in real estate. Lodha Group has achieved net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions and is advancing in Scope 3, with nearly all construction powered by renewable energy and wastewater recycling. This dedication places the conglomerate among the world’s top ten developers in sustainability.
“The Lodha Philanthropy Foundation represents the dreams of all 1.5 billion Indians, and from today onwards, all of India will be a partner in, and benefit from, the growth and success of Lodha Group and Macrotech Developers. In the spirit of jan bhaagidari, this is our humble contribution to nation-building.” – Abhishek Lodha
As Lodha Group redefines corporate philanthropy through LPF, Abhishek Lodha’s vision reflects the potential for corporate India to build a legacy of social progress and national development.
