Born in the small village of Rampur Maniharan in Uttar Pradesh in 1946, Gupta’s journey was one of sheer perseverance. His early education took place in a school with minimal resources, but he excelled, earning a place at IIT Kharagpur for a degree in engineering. From there, he moved to the United States for higher studies, eventually settling there and building a successful business empire, earning millions. Yet, despite his achievements, his heart remained connected to his homeland, and his philanthropy became a means to bridge the opportunities he had received with those who lacked them.

Gupta’s charitable efforts have been most visible in the field of education. Understanding the transformative power of learning, he established the Vinod Gupta Charitable Foundation, dedicated to empowering marginalized communities, particularly women and girls. The foundation’s work began with the establishment of Shrimati Ram Rati Women’s Polytechnic in his native village in 2000, later expanded into the Ramrati Institute of Technology in 2012. Over time, this initiative flourished into the Ramrati Education Complex, a hub of learning that includes technical institutes, a nursing school, a para-medical sciences center, and a women’s empowerment center.

His commitment to education extended to his alma mater, IIT Kharagpur, where he played a pioneering role in introducing non-technical education. His contributions led to the founding of the Vinod Gupta School of Management, providing business education to engineering graduates. Furthering his belief in the intersection of law and technology, he facilitated the establishment of the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, India’s first law school specializing in intellectual property. Beyond these, he also helped set up institutions in Lucknow, including the Dr. Giri Lal Gupta School for Public Health and the Dr. Shanker Dayal Sharma Institute of Democracy, ensuring that education extended to governance and healthcare.

His philanthropy did not stop in India. In the United States, he supported educational initiatives at the University of Nebraska, funding programs for small business management and scholarships for minority students pursuing science and engineering degrees. At George Washington University, his contributions led to the establishment of the Benjamin Kane Gupta Fellows Program, an elite internship initiative in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, as well as the Ben Gupta Endowed Fund for International Legal Education, which provides financial support for students from developing countries.

Beyond education, Gupta has been a significant contributor to wildlife conservation in India, particularly at the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan. His foundation has provided essential equipment, including GPS systems, professional cameras, and night vision devices, to support the rangers protecting India’s dwindling tiger population. It has also facilitated infrastructural improvements such as the construction of water reservoirs and staff accommodations, ensuring that conservation efforts are sustainable and effective.

Throughout his journey, Gupta has remained steadfast in his belief that true success is measured by the impact one creates for others. Having pledged to donate his entire wealth to charity, he continues to shape the future of countless individuals, proving that business and benevolence can go hand in hand. From a small village in Uttar Pradesh to an influential position in global philanthropy, his life’s work stands as a great example of the boundless possibilities of education, perseverance, and an enduring spirit of giving.
