Raj and Indra Nooyi donate $1M to Yale School of Medicine

:

The Department of Surgery of the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) has received a generous $1 million donation from Raj and Indra Nooyi to establish the Raj and Indra Nooyi Cancer Research Fund. This fund aims to support pioneering research in oncology, particularly in reducing the toxicity and burden of cancer treatment. Under the leadership of Mehra Golshan, Professor of Surgery (Oncology), and in collaboration with Parisa Lotfi, Assistant Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, the initiative will enhance innovative and multidisciplinary approaches to cancer care.

Indra Nooyi, a 1980 graduate of Yale’s Master of Public and Private Management (MPPM) program and former Chair and CEO of PepsiCo, along with her husband, Raj Nooyi, a former supply chain management executive, have been longstanding benefactors of Yale University. Their philanthropic contributions extend beyond the Yale School of Medicine, as they have also supported the Yale School of Management and the Yale School of Public Health. The creation of this cancer research fund is a reflection of their commitment to advancing scientific research and improving patient outcomes.

The Nooyis’ decision to establish this research fund is a result of their recognition of the critical need for innovative cancer treatment methodologies. Traditional grant mechanisms often pose challenges for conducting groundbreaking research, and this philanthropic gift addresses those constraints. By supporting cancer research and surgical advancements at YSM, the fund will enable researchers to explore transformative approaches in oncology.

The establishment of the Raj and Indra Nooyi Cancer Research Fund is expected to significantly enhance research efforts in breast cancer treatment. Golshan and his team will use these resources to focus on early detection, advanced treatment strategies, and minimizing the toxicity of cancer therapies. The ultimate goal is to provide optimal, patient-centered care while reducing the overall burden of breast cancer treatment.

The research efforts will focus on minimizing treatment toxicity by developing novel image-guided and molecular-based imaging techniques that reduce the need for re-operations in breast cancer patients. The team is also dedicated to de-escalating treatment for low-risk conditions such as Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), ensuring that unnecessary interventions are avoided while maintaining high efficacy. Additionally, efforts will be directed towards improving post-surgical outcomes by lowering the incidence of lymphedema (arm swelling) in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery, enhancing their post-operative quality of life.

The Raj and Indra Nooyi Cancer Research Fund represents a transformative step in advancing cancer research at YSM’s Department of Surgery. Through this initiative, YSM is poised to make significant strides in oncology, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in medical research and patient care. The Global Indians‘ philanthropic support will serve as a catalyst for groundbreaking discoveries, ultimately benefiting cancer patients worldwide.
