:

Sunny Varkey, a Dubai-based Indian entrepreneur, has not only revolutionized the world of education through GEMS Education, one of the largest operators of private kindergarten-to-grade-12 schools in the world – but also through his philanthropic efforts, embodied by the Varkey Foundation. Launched in 2010 as the charitable arm of GEMS, the foundation reflects his deep-rooted belief in the power of education and the values of giving back instilled in him by his parents.

Empowering underprivileged communities

Through the foundation’s initiatives, such as the MGCubed Project in Ghana and Instructional Leadership Training in Uganda, Sunny Varkey continues his mission of giving back by addressing educational disparities.

The MGCubed Project, which uses solar-powered and satellite-enabled distance learning, brings education to underserved communities, including remote areas and refugee camp through interactive distance learning projects. With this project, the foundation has improved the quality of education delivered to refugee children residing in Ampain Refugee Camp, Western Region, Ghana.

While the Instructional Leadership Training in Uganda is grounded in the belief that teachers are at the heart of quality education. By empowering teachers; the foundation helps lift entire communities.

Enhancing the status of teachers with the Global Teacher Prize

Varkey Foundation’s commitment to enhancing the status of teachers has garnered global attention, especially through the creation of the Global Teacher Prize established in 2014. This annual US$1 million award recognizes exceptional teachers who have made outstanding contributions to the profession. By honouring educators and promoting innovative learning environments, the Varkey Foundation shines a light on the importance of teaching and its potential to transform societies.

Motivating students with the Global Student Prize

Varkey’s giving-back journey doesn’t stop with teachers. In 2021, the foundation launched the Global Student Prize, an annual $100,000 award recognizing students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, creativity, and a commitment to global citizenship. “Students, too, have the power to impact their peers and society,” says Varkey. Through this prize, the foundation highlights the vital role students play in shaping a brighter future.

Sunny Varkey’s life legacy is one of transforming lives through education, empowering teachers and students to create lasting, positive change. His vision of charity and education intertwines to show the world that true giving is not just about money, but about uplifting others and building a better future for all.
