Edible Cutlery: The eco-friendly alternative to plastic

By: Amrita Priya

The global plastic pollution crisis has reached alarming levels, with billions of disposable cutlery pieces discarded annually. These utensils, primarily made of plastic, take centuries to decompose, contributing significantly to environmental degradation. Seeking an innovative solution to this pressing issue, Australia-based entrepreneur Abhinav Bijavara Nagaraj founded Edible Cutlery, an eco-friendly alternative designed to reduce plastic waste.

A Sustainable Culinary Innovation

Abhinav’s venture, Edible Cutlery, provides biodegradable utensils that can be consumed after use. Crafted from natural ingredients, these edible spoons, forks, straws, bowls, and cups offer a sustainable and practical way to reduce plastic consumption. The concept aligns with his vision of giving back to nature while integrating sustainability into everyday practices. With a range of flavors, such as chocolate, cheesy garlic, oregano, and green mango, Edible Cutlery enhances dining experiences by offering a delicious complement to meals.

The practicality of edible cutlery extends beyond sustainability; it is an exciting innovation for outdoor events like picnics and barbecues. For instance, chocolate-flavored spoons pair perfectly with ice cream, while cheesy garlic options enhance pasta dishes. Recently, the company successfully closed its first crowdfunding round, a testament to the growing support for sustainable dining solutions.

Gaining Global Recognition

Abhinav’s commitment to sustainability led him and his team to Japan, where they showcased Edible Cutlery at SusHi Tech Tokyo. This global startup program provided an opportunity to network with industry leaders, investors, and distributors. Participation required qualification through the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science, and Innovation in Western Australia, which selected Edible Cutlery as one of the three startups to represent the state. The experience helped expand the brand’s global reach and strengthen its market presence.

Entrepreneurial Journey from India to Australia

Abhinav’s journey began in India, where he earned a degree in engineering before moving to Australia in 2019 to pursue a master’s in marketing. His early career involved freelancing in marketing and later working at Heat Exchangers WA, a role that combined his technical and marketing expertise. His passion for entrepreneurship led him to launch Aeozo, a marketing company, followed by two more ventures—Pro Shakes and Edible Cutlery. Each business reflects his ability to identify market gaps and deliver innovative solutions.

Managing Multiple Ventures

Balancing multiple startups is no small feat, but Abhinav attributes his success to strong partnerships, investors, and a dedicated team. Aeozo supports over 100 businesses with marketing strategies, while Pro Shakes offers protein-rich, flavorful beverages. Despite the challenges, he remains committed to delivering high-quality products and services that add value to consumers and stakeholders.

Reflecting on his journey, Abhinav considers his move to Australia a turning point. He continues to seek growth opportunities while championing sustainability through Edible Cutlery, aiming to reshape the way people consume disposable products. His ventures underscore a commitment to innovation, quality, and environmental responsibility, making him a formidable force in the sustainable business landscape. Read More
