(Our Bureau, June 9) India’s football captain Sunil Chhetri has surpassed Argentinian legend Lionel Messi to become the second-highest active international goal scorer. He achieved this feat after scoring a match-winning brace against Bangladesh in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers on Monday in Doha. The 36-year-old Indian now has 74 goals to his tally and is only behind Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo (103) among international footballers that are still playing. “Last year, many people were asking last year or so, ‘when is Sunil going to retire?’ What are we going to do then if he retires? By far, in every training session, he is our best player,” said Indian head coach Igor Stimac.
