Yen or not, for Indian travellers, it’s destination Japan

Travel majors are reporting a substantial surge in demand and bookings for Japan among Indian travellers, calling it a ‘year-round opportunity.’

Demand and bookings are up 80% this year over pre pandemic times for Japan’s cherry blossom Sakura season, industry insiders said.

Rajeev Kale, president and country head of Holidays, MICE, and Visa at Thomas Cook (India) Limited, said Japan is now seeing interest beyond merely the Sakura season, and moving to a year-round opportunity. “Our data reflects an uptick for the Snow Festival in Sapporo (Hokkaido); the scenic Alpine route; the Ice Breaker Ship experience until March besides other winter experiences and skiing,” he said.

“We are particularly encouraged with the demand for longer stays and premium experiences like teamLab Planets, stay in Hakone with private onsen (hot springs and pools to relax and rejuvenate), Tokyo helicopter rides and distinctive stays like the traditional Ryokans,” he added.

Over the past year, searches for Japan on MakeMyTrip have surged, with Tokyo ranking as one of the most sought-after cities. ‘This heightened travel interest is also translating into action, with bookings for Japan increasing by nearly 75% compared to 2023,” said co-founder and group CEO Rajesh Magow…
