Indian Paralympic

Thanks to the fantastic performance by Indian paralympic athletes, the country ranked 24th on medal tally - with 5 Gold, 8 Silver and 6 Bronze. So far, this is considered India's best-ever medal haul at the Paralympics.

Deepa Malik (born 30 September 1970) is the first female Indian paralympic athlete. She started her career at the age of 30. She is the first Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympic Games. She won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in shot put. Deepa also won gold in the F-53/54 Javelin event at the para-athletic Grand Prix held in Dubai in 2018.

India sent its largest ever contingent to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, with 54 athletes (40 men, 14 women) across nine para sports. Some of the Indian paralympic athletes who made it to the list were Harvinder Singh, Vivek Chikara, Pramod Bhagat, Singhraj Adhana, Avani Lekhara, and Bhavina Patel.

Avani Lekhara, an Indian Paralympian and rifle shooter, created history at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics after winning a Gold Medal in 10m air rifle standing and a Bronze Medal in 50m rifle 3 positions. She is also the first Indian woman to win multiple medals in a single Paralympic Games. Avani began shooting in 2015, inspired by former Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra and has since won several national and international titles.

Praveen Kumar became the youngest Indian to win a Paralympic medal. The Indian paralympic athlete clinched a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. The Delhi lad leapt a best of 2.07m to win India's fourth high jump medal in Tokyo. Praveen Kumar started off with a clearance of 1.88m, before deciding to skip 1.93m and jumping 1.97m directly. He then cleared 2.01m in his second attempt at the height, maintained his calm to clear 2.04m in his four before trying to better his personal best at 2.07m.
