It was in May this year that India and European Union decided to resume negotiations on a comprehensive trade agreement. And EU’s focus in only on agricultural products. Not many know but out of the 371 Geographical Indication (GI) registered products of India, only 111 are agricultural products. Interestingly, only a handful of products are doing well commercially as others have more cultural and heritage value. Currently only few products like basmati rice, tea from different parts of India, select horticultural products and spices are exported. And majority of the GI products of India are sold within the region or within the country.
