India accounts for the world’s highest number of snakebite cases and deaths according to the World Health Organization. Snakebites can kill or disable survivors, and most of the victims live in rural, forested and agricultural areas. According to an article in Scroll, snakebites affect people with much less of a political voice and thereby the urgency to address it is lower. In 2019, the WHO said that 81,000 to 1,38,000 people die annually due to snake bites across the globe. Going by this record, Indian deaths due to snakebites occupy a bulk of the global toll.
