What is the value of a tree? Age multiplied by ₹74500. Yes, you read it right. A Supreme Court appointed committee for the first time in India set guideline for evaluating the value of a tree after a state wanted to cut 356 trees. According to a report, out of the ₹74500, the cost of the oxygen provided by a tree is ₹45000, followed by cost of bio-fertilizers which are worth ₹20000. Upon adding costs of micro-nutrients and compost, the report stated, loving trees will more often than not outweigh the benefit of the projects they are felled for. The committee also stressed on the necessity to do away with the evaluation of trees only on the basis of their timber value and rather focus on the positive impact of trees on the environment.
