Meet the five Indians selected for Rhodes Scholarship 2024

(January 5, 2024) Five Indian students have been selected as Rhodes Scholars for 2024, and will head to Oxford University for their postgraduate studies. The rigorous selection process, which involved over 1,000 applicants, was conducted by a panel headed by former foreign secretary and Ambassador, Nirupama Rao. Global Indian takes a look at the youngsters who have bagged what is arguably one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world. They will join a cohort of 105 scholars from around the world for their fully-funded postgraduate study.

Since 1903, the Rhodes scholarship, offered by the Rhodes Trust, has brought the world’s best and brightest young students, handpicked from the top universities around the world, to the University of Oxford. It was established by Cecil John Rhodes, a British mining tycoon and the founder of De Beers—a diamond company that had, until recently, wielded control over global trade.

The Rhodes Trust’s website states:

We find, bring together and develop exceptional people who are impatient with the way things are and have the courage to act.

Originally intended to foster unity among English-speaking nations, this esteemed and long-standing international scholarship programme underwent revisions over time. By the 21st century, eligibility expanded to encompass citizens from all countries. Indians gained access to this scholarship opportunity in 1947.

Joann is interested in delving into the possibility of faith becoming a subject of public discourse. She is keen on merging her love for writing to examine the interplay between faith and everyday experiences. Having completed a BA in English from Christ University and subsequently earning an MA in English from Jawaharlal Nehru University, she now aims to pursue theology at Oxford University.

Ayan, a senior student at National Law University (NLU), Delhi, holds a keen interest in matters related to sentencing and punishment, particularly focusing on the complexities surrounding the death penalty and prolonged incarceration. At Oxford, Ayan aims to explore the fields of criminology and criminal justice for his further studies.

With a love for teaching Ayan hopes to shape the future of criminal justice education. He has served as research and teaching assistant to his professors in NLU Delhi and currently serves as the editor-in-chief of NLUD’s Journal of Legal Studies. In his free time he loves either playing or watching tennis.

Hailing from Kashmir, Asma aspires to make a career in the sphere of global and imperial history. She is currently pursuing international history at Georgetown University in Qatar, and plans to pursue a master’s degree in global and imperial history followed by a Ph.D. in history at the University of Oxford.

During her time at Oxford, Asma aims to explore the archives of British missionaries in South Asia to gain deeper insights into the history of Kashmir, the Himalayan region where she spent her formative years. Her ultimate vision is to develop a digital archive chronicling Kashmir’s history, facilitating access and contributions from generations of Kashmiris. With the archive her plan is to offer an alternative perspective, inviting Kashmiris to share their family’s oral histories, photographs, obituaries, and personal experiences, to illuminate and comprehend their past, and influence their present in the process.

Mohammad Zayaan Asimi

Mohammad, a final-year BA LLB (Hons) student at Gujarat National Law University, hails from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. His academic focus revolves around the convergence of law, society, and technology. His ambition is to explore the influence of technology in enhancing access to justice within marginalised segments of society. He aspires to undertake socio-legal research at Oxford.

Mohammad Zayaan Asimi

The sports enthusiast has represented Jammu and Kashmir in national basketball tournaments.

Siddhant Dhawan

Siddhant completed his BS in bioengineering at Stanford University in 2022 and is currently pursuing a research-focused MS in biology at the same institution. During his tenure as a researcher at Stanford, he has contributed to multiple neuroscience research papers while working in the laboratories of esteemed professors like Nobel laureate Prof. Thomas Sudof, Prof. Tarik Massoud, and Prof. Nicolas Grillet.

Siddhant Dhhawan

Devoted to advancing inclusive healthcare and education, Siddhant spearheads initiatives that advocate for menstrual equity and promote science education, impacting numerous individuals in both the US and India. His dedication extends to advocating for mental health support and promoting diversity within academia. In preparation for a career as a physician-scientist, Siddhant intends to further his studies in neuroscience. He aims to conduct research on motor neuron diseases utilizing stem cells and genetic engineering techniques.

“There are over 4,500 living Rhodes scholars residing in more than 100 countries around the world,” shares the Rhodes Trust’s website.

"I discovered that progressive metal was based on instrument-driven songs and that is the point where Indian classical and metal meet." His enthusiasm compounded when he realised there wasn't anybody out there who seemed to have had the idea of sitar-metal, or even a band led by any instrument other than a guitar, keyboard or drums.

Dave Grohl and a journey of discovery

Rishabh's own journey of discovery continued, and he went from the Foo Fighters to Slipknot and Nirvana. "It was around 2011, when I just played a metal song on the speakers. My dad, wondering what on earth was happening, came by to check on me. What was surprising was that he really enjoyed what he was listening to," he said in an interview. Technically speaking, too, the two forms of music are very different. Hindustani classical music involves playing one scale or raaga in a 45-minute concert. With metal, a single song can contain several scales.

At first, the young Global Indian's efforts were not well received. Metal was seen as dark and hairy, while the sitar receives reverence. His fortunes turned in 2015 when he released his first cover of Animals As Leaders' 'Tempting Time'. In no time, the song garnered lakhs of views. That was also the year he founded his band, Mute The Saint. They produced covers of artists like Animals as Leaders, Steven Wilson and Meshuggah and were a success. While the two genres might stand as polar opposites, to the trained and untrained year alike, Rishabh saw only common ground, a similarity "in terms of evoking an inner revolution and spreading peace."

In 2016, Mute the Saint released a self-titled album and two years later, the second, which contained a bunch of covers of Coldplay and Foo Fighters. Rishabh has performed with singer Arijit Singh and solo headlines sitar metal shows.

Lara Rajagopalan: The Indian-American teen artist makes it to K-Pop band KATSEYE

(January 7, 2023) In recent years, the global phenomenon of K-pop has undeniably taken the world by storm, captivating audiences with its infectious beats, dynamic performances, and charismatic artists. Notably, the craze for K-pop has reached even the vibrant and diverse youth of India, where a significant fanbase has emerged. Among the enthusiastic admirers is Lara Rajagopalan, a talented musician of Indian origin based in Los Angeles. Breaking barriers and embracing the K-pop wave, Lara has achieved a remarkable feat by securing a spot in the final lineup of the six-member girl group, KATSEYE. Launched by HYBE, the K-Pop entertainment company that gave the world BTS, KATSEYE is set to release their debut album in 2024. It was in 2023 that Lara submitted her entry for the audition program - The Debut: Dream Academy - that's garnered over 120,000 submissions, from which a final list of 20 contestants was meticulously selected. Of them, six made it to KATSEYE, which showcases a diverse lineup representing four different countries: the Philippines, the USA, South Korea, and Switzerland.

A huge fan of K-Pop, Lara was keen to make a mark in the world that justifies her singing and dancing talent. For someone who describes herself as "passionate, real and confident," she was ready to take that leap and put herself out in the audition program that has now made her a finalist in the KATSEYE.

The six girls will be trained for a year, and their journey will be the subject of an upcoming untitled Netflix documentary series. Directed by award-winning filmmaker, Nadia Hallgren, the series is set to premiere in 2024.

How Kanak Jha rose to become America’s table tennis star

(January 11, 2023) "America is the land of dreams. What am I doing here if I don't let my son follow his?" Karuna Jha's 22-year-old son, Kanak, is a table tennis prodigy and as he grew up, his parents made sure every penny went towards helping him and his sister train. Their efforts have more than paid off. The young Global Indian has won the US Men's Singles not once, not twice but four times, the youngest player at the 2016 Rio Olympics (he was 16 then) and the first American to win a medal at the Youth Olympics in Argentina in 2018. All this before his twenty-third birthday. A piece I came across in ESPN poignantly describes Kanak's graduation from high school. When his name was called, there was no applause from his classmates, "his mother's lone claps fade meekly away," the writer says. "The youngest athlete - and the first born in the 21st century - to represent the United States at the Olympics and the International Table Tennis Federation World Cup is a stranger at his own school." It's a strange thing, Kanak Jha, with the amiable good looks of a jock and an easygoing manner, has everything it takes to be the most popular kid in school. It's a small sacrifice made along the way, however, for this single-minded young champion. Jha doesn't seem to be easily fazed, table tennis has strengthened his mind just as much as his body. "I'm quite strong mentally because table tennis is a very mental sport," he said. "i'm always trying to stay positive when things aren't going well. My mental game is quite strong and it's one of my biggest strengths." That resilience has helped his game, too - Jha has the maturity of a veteran, keeping his calm, staying positive and turning around a poor game.

At the Jha house, the living room is filled with Kanak's many trophies and accolades. The house, his mother told ESPN, hasn't been re-done since the mid-1990s, because all the money has been spent on table tennis for Kanak and his sister Prachi. Always a spirited kid, his parents noticed early on that Kanak's eyes lit up when he saw a game of table tennis at the India Community Center in Milpitas, where the family lived at the time.

Both his parents were IT professionals and could cough up the steep price of experienced coaching - anywhere between $50 and $100 per hour, with around twelve hours of training per week, per child. While they could pay, it meant giving up a lot of things, from family vacations to a new car.

As his friends started high school Kanak had found victory in the 2013 US National Championships, which he won four times. That's when, at the age of 14, he and his sister decided to leave home and head to Sweden, the global hub for table tennis. Kanak wanted the best coaching and also, a better class of opponents.

Kanak arrived in Halmstad, Sweden and fell in love with the place. He found fame there, he would walk down the street and have people recognize him, a far cry from the United States - and many other countries, really - where table tennis simply command such viewership. His life remains a mix of fame and obscurity, from being stopped for selfies to barely being recognized by his own classmates.

Making history at the Rio Olympics

Training was rigorous and his sister kept him company, cooking his meals at the end of the day. He was training for eight hours a day, at the bordtennisklubb, perfecting his game under world champion Ulf Carlsson, who was head coach at the time. At 14, he was selected for the World Cup and two years later, made it to his first Olympic Games, becoming the youngest American Olympian. "At the time I didn't fully realise what it meant to be an Olympian," Kanak grins. "I'm very happy to have been able to compete there and it definitely gives me an advantage."

In 2018, he won the World Junior Circuit Finals in Luxembourg, shooting up the U18 world rankings. A year later, he decided it was time to perfect his technique even more and joined the Budesliga in Germany, where he trained for seven hours a day, six days a week. "The world class are setting the bar very high. The Chinese are practicing six to seven hours a day. So, if you want to compete with them you have to find a solution. Just practicing two to three hours a day will not work," Kanak's coach, Joerg Bitzigeio, stated.

Finding resilience

The pandemic was a big blow, also because Kanak's game started out very strong in 2020. In April that year, looking somewhat down in the dumps, he spoke with Pong Positive, saying, "It's been tough for me. I'm just trying to stay positive. Normally I train all the time, I love playing and practicing. So, it's been tough." He made the best use of his time, watching old games and fine-tuning his technique, something he didn't have the time to do otherwise. As always, he showed remarkable maturity and persistence in the face of very trying circumstances. "I'm lucky enough to have a table at home, as well as a robot, so I could practice."

Tokyo calling

All that effort culminated in 2021, for after ten years of training eight hours a day, he headed to the Tokyo Olympics. His parents couldn't go with him, as pandemic restrictions were still in place at the time and outside spectators were not allowed. He had another Indian-origin player, Nikhil Kumar by his side.

He lost 4-2 to Russian player Kirill Skachkov and the USA, still a fledgling nation in the table tennis arena, at least, lost to Sweden. However, Jha managed to secure one victory for America, defeating Mattias Falck.

In 2022, he was ranked number 22 in the world. "It feels really good," he said, in an interview with Butterly. "But honestly, not as good as the top 20 would sound. That's the next step."

Vibing to his own tune: Rishaad Chaudhry has many musical gems in his bag

(August 8, 2022) Rishaad Chaudhry began his musical journey as an amateur who used to write songs in his room during the pandemic-induced lockdown. As the world opened up, he continued to make music, very different from that of others. He could incorporate numerous genres into one song or make songs of different kinds of genres. From pop and hip-hop to rap and indie Hindi music, this Geneva-born singer has created his brand of music, which sets him apart from other artists. "While making music, I simply reflect on my own life, experiences, learnings, and emotions," smiles Rishaad, in conversation with Global Indian. His latest track, ‘Tu’, is a Hindi pop song with a touch of desi rap, which is refreshingly different from a regular Hindi song. He says the beat for ‘Tu’ really struck out for him as it has a happy yet gloomy melody and tune. “After deciding the beat, I thought of the chorus of the song. I was slowly able to bring the harmony together with elements of desi rap,” explains the singer, about what all went into the making of the song.

Musical journey

Rishaad was born in Geneva, where his father was transferred for a job opportunity in 1997. The family, however, returned to India later and settled down in Gurgaon. The budding singer went to Shri Ram school Aravali, Gurgaon, and then to La Martiniere, Lucknow. “Having spent a major part of his school life at the boarding school, I made lifelong friends and memories, along with gaining important life lessons which I believe are of use to me till today and will be for the rest of my life,” says the youngster, who is currently studying Business in OP Jindal Global University, Sonepat.

Rishaad began writing songs in the pop/hip hop genre. “As I grew as a musician, I delved into rap as well as Hindi songs. I initially did not choose rap and was inclined only towards singing. However, after listening to the kind of music my generation and target audience listen to, I gave rap a shot as well and found my niche in it," he says. His previous song ‘Khafa’ echoes the pain of longing. ‘Not Alright’ and ‘I’m Sorry’ are also two of his most popular previous releases.

“Not Alright is a song for everyone who is putting up a happy face for the world but is struggling within themselves. I wrote this song to remind everyone to be kind because we can never know what is happening in someone else’s life. ‘I’m Sorry’ is an apology for all the wrongs I did while being hurt in love,” informs Rishaad.

The music he has been listening to over the years has had a huge impact on the way Rishaad began to make his own. “I am a huge fan of the rap, pop, and hip-hop genre as well as Indie Hindi music. Some of the artists I have been listening to for years, including 21 Savage, Powerful, Drake, The Kid Laroi, Juice Wrld, Zaeden, and Yashraj have inspired me to showcase my take,” says Rishaad, who also performed in his high school band. The youngster believes rap is a genre that has become increasingly popular among the people of his generation. “This inspired me to incorporate the genre into my songs."

Finding his voice

With his music, says Rishaad, he intends to connect with people and allow them to connect as an audience. “Life is full of ups and downs, and no one should feel as if they are alone on this roller coaster ride,” says the singer, who is looking forward to travelling abroad to obtain a degree in digital marketing, which will assist him in his career as a musician.

So what more tracks are in the making? “Currently, I am working on an English song, its working title is ‘Broke My heart’. It is a song about heartbreak and betrayal and echoes the feelings of sadness one feels after losing the one they loved the most. This song is an extremely special one as I am in the process of recording my first ever music video for the same,” informs the talented singer, who also has several Hindi singles in the making which will also be released soon.

He says the constant motivation to create music is what gives him immense joy and satisfaction. “Each day, my passion only grows along with my experience and knowledge regarding the brand I wish to build as a musician,” smiles the youngster who indulges in different kinds of sports including football. “I now see a clear image of where I wish to be in the coming years and what I wish to achieve. My main focus is on creating music and content to reach an audience all around the world and continue to do what I love,” says Rishaad.

Vihaan and Nav Agarwal: Teen eco-heroes helping Delhi manage its waste

(November 30, 2022) In 2017, two people were killed in East Delhi when a large mound of garbage in the Ghazipur landfill collapsed, sweeping people in the vicinity into a nearby canal. Spread over 70 acres, with a mountain of garbage higher than a 15-storey building, the lethal collapse was one more alarm bell in a city that was already choking. Watching the tragedy unfold on the news were Vihaan and Nav Agarwal, two siblings in Delhi. "The next day, the whole city was engulfed in a blanket of smoke. When we read about it in the newspaper, the connection between waste and air pollution became clearer," Vihaan said. Delhi generates 11,144 tonnes of trash per day and up to 250 tonnes of municipal solid waste is burned every day, releasing 2000kg of PM10 and 1,800 kg/day of PM 2.5. Over one-third of the air pollution in Delhi is caused by burning waste in landfills. Vihaan was 14 at the time and Nav only 11, but growing up in Delhi had already taken a toll on their health, especially as Vihaan was asthmatic. Leading the way by segregating at home

Taking inspiration from icons like British naturalist David Attenborough and the storied conservationist Jane Goodall, the brothers began separating their waste at home, setting aside the recyclables. "The thought process in our mind was like, our waste shouldn't go there, our waste shouldn't become fodder for this fire," Vihaan said. They collected such a mountain of trash that their grandfather told them sternly, and only half in jest, that one of them, either the boys or the trash, had to go. However, they realised that their segregated waste was being mixed again after it was collected. When they contacted recyclers, they were told that they had too small an amount to be picked up.

One Step Greener

The brothers rallied a team together through the neighbourhood WhatsApp group. In 2018, they founded One Step Greener, an organisation aimed at preventing pollution caused by waste.

It marked the start of the recycling initiative that would earn the boys one of the top awards for children - the 2021 KidsRights International Children's Peace Prize. As they received the prize from Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi, they entered an elite club of young, global changemakers, including Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg. The Dutch prize includes an education grant and a cash award of 1,00,000 euros. "It's an old saying, but everyone's collective effort does actually make a difference," Vihan said afterwards.

They started with 15 homes in 2018, and four years later, the organisation has grown to cover schools, offices and over 1,500 households across Delhi. They have plans to expand to Kolkata and thanks to the exposure the Global Indians received through the KidsRights award, there is a fair amount of international interest as well. The organisation also works to spread awareness about the importance of recycling.

Accolades galore

Vihaan and Nav Agarwal haven't seen their teenage years through yet but have a long list of accolades to their credit already. Vihaan is also the First Asian to win the Children's Climate Prize, 2019 in Sweden and is an Ashoka Youth Venturer. Fifteen-year-old Nav has shown a talent for oration, which he uses to inspire people to join his green movement.
