Embracing a new life at Strasbourg

Contributed By: Joy Sengupta

Strasbourg, France, ZIP Code: 67005

I lived in Noida before relocating to Strasbourg six years ago. The Indian conglomerate I’ve been with for the past nine years presented me with an opportunity to lead one of its divisions in Europe – specifically in Strasbourg, France. It was a fantastic chance, so I didn’t hesitate, and I’ve been content with this wonderful turn in my career.

Although I’d moved frequently within India, I had never experienced living abroad, and the transition has been fulfilling. When I first arrived, Strasbourg felt like something straight out of a storybook – it was incredibly picturesque. The people here have been welcoming, despite the language barrier. Whether at work or in my neighbourhood, I was warmly received, even by those with limited English proficiency. The French are polite, soft-spoken, and respectful of personal space, allowing you to enjoy your life without any unnecessary interruptions. Living here has made me more self-reliant, handling everything from household chores to tasks like assembling new furniture.

Strasbourg,

A neighbourhood at Strasbourg

Strasbourg is the capital and the largest city of the Grand Est region. Formerly known as Alsace, it is located in northeastern France. It’s also the official seat of the European Parliament and lies close to the German border, blending French and German cultural and architectural influences. I live in a locality called Gare-Tribunal as the connectivity from here to my workplace is great.

On weekends, I love unwinding at the local winstubs – traditional eateries and wine bars common in the Alsace region. They’re affordable and cheerful, and I’ve grown to enjoy them just like the locals do. The cozy atmosphere, paired with hearty Alsace dishes like baeckeoffe, cordon bleu, tarte flambée, vol-au-vents, fleischnacka, and spaetzle, is delightful. Being a fan of potatoes and meat, I’m always in for a treat.

While Strasbourg offers many attractions, Parc de la Citadelle is a personal favorite. It’s a peaceful retreat away from the city center, and I often walk there, admiring the charming residential houses along the way. The park is built around an old fortress designed by Vauban, with a lake that hosts water sports in the summer for both children and adults. There are also zip lines, fitness equipment, and petanque courts available year-round. I particularly enjoy strolling through the pathways and taking in the historical moat. It’s a lovely spot to spend a whole day during nice weather or just a few hours to escape the city’s bustle. The clean amenities and nearby cafes make it a perfect place to grab a fresh bite.

Christmas market at Strasbourg

With Christmas approaching, I’m reminded of Strasbourg’s famous Christmas market, the oldest in France and one of the most renowned in Europe. It began in 1570 and consists of several markets spread across the city’s squares, each with its own theme. The traditional Alsace food and special Christmas treats on offer make it one of the most enchanting times of the year. From November onward, the entire city transforms into a festive wonderland, and the markets provide one of the most magical Christmas experiences I’ve ever had.
