Embracing Gothenburg: An Indian’s journey through Sweden’s city

When I first set foot in Gothenburg 2.5 years ago, I was filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. Coming from India, where the streets are alive with colour, sound, and a constant buzz of activity, Gothenburg felt like a serene, almost magical place —calm, yet brimming with life in its own unique way. Over time, this city has not just been my home; it has become a part of me, enchanting me with its landscape, community, food, and culture.

Gothenburg’s landscape is one of its most captivating aspects. The city is nestled on the west coast of Sweden, where the land meets the North Sea, creating a stunning contrast between urban sophistication and raw natural beauty. The archipelago, with its scattered islands, is just a short boat ride away and offers a peaceful retreat from the city. I often find myself wandering along the canals, where the water reflects the pastel-coloured buildings and the occasional swan glides by. The parks here, like Slottsskogen and Botaniska Trädgården, are more than just green spaces — they are sanctuaries where the rhythm of the city slows down, and you can lose yourself in the quiet whisper of the trees.

As I settled into my new life, I discovered the warmth of the Indian community in Gothenburg. Despite being miles away from home, I’ve found a second family here. The Indian community is close-knit, with regular gatherings, festivals, and events that keep our culture alive. Diwali and Holi celebrations in Gothenburg are nothing short of magical. The festival of lights transforms the cold, dark nights of November into a glittering spectacle, with homes adorned with diyas and the aroma of traditional sweets filling the air. Holi, on the other hand, bursts onto the scene in a riot of colours, with friends and strangers alike coming together to celebrate the arrival of spring. These moments remind me of home and make me feel like I’m part of something larger than myself.

Food has always been an integral part of my life, and Gothenburg has not disappointed in that regard. While I do miss the spicy, tangy street food of India, the city has its own culinary delights that have found a place in my heart. However, I must admit, nothing beats the comfort of a homemade Indian meal after a long day. Fortunately, Gothenburg boasts several Indian grocery stores where I can find everything from masalas to basmati rice. The Indian restaurants here, such as Bombay Palace and Masala Kitchen, offer a taste of home with dishes that are as close to authentic as you can get outside of India. I often find myself introducing my Swedish friends to the joys of biryani, butter chicken, and naan, watching their faces light up with each bite.

But Gothenburg’s food scene isn’t just about Indian cuisine. The city is a haven for food lovers, with a diverse range of options that reflect its multicultural population. From the fresh seafood at Feskekôrka, the fish market that looks like a church, to the cozy cafes offering fika—a Swedish tradition of coffee and pastries—Gothenburg has something for every palate. One of my favorite weekend activities is exploring the food markets, like Saluhallen, where you can sample everything from Swedish delicacies to international flavors.

Culturally, Gothenburg is a vibrant and dynamic city. The arts scene here is thriving, with numerous galleries, theaters, and music venues offering a wide range of performances. The Gothenburg Film Festival, one of the largest in Scandinavia, is a highlight for any movie buff. I’ve also come to appreciate the city’s love for music, especially jazz and indie rock. There’s always a live performance happening somewhere, whether it’s in a small, intimate venue or a grand concert hall.

The people of Gothenburg are another reason I’ve grown so fond of this city. Swedes might have a reputation for being reserved, but I’ve found them to be incredibly warm and welcoming once you break through that initial barrier. The concept of “lagom” — not too much, not too little, just right—permeates every aspect of life here, from work-life balance to social interactions. It’s a philosophy that I’ve come to admire and adopt in my own life.

As I reflect on my time in Gothenburg, I realize how much this city has given me. It has been a place of discovery, both of a new culture and of myself. Living here has taught me to appreciate the beauty in simplicity, the value of community, and the joy of experiencing life at a slower pace. Gothenburg has truly enchanted me, and I look forward to many more years in this beautiful city that I now proudly call home.
