Embracing the lively culture and energy of Auckland

When I moved to Auckland six years ago from my hometown in Kerala, I was filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension, knowing no one in this new country. I had always dreamed of working in a place that offered professional growth opportunities alongside a high quality of life, and Auckland seemed like the perfect choice. What I didn’t anticipate was how much I would come to love the city and the fulfilling life I’ve built here, including the wonderful friendships I’ve made.

I work as a radiologist in one of Auckland’s hospitals, and I must admit, the initial days were challenging. The healthcare system here is different from what I was used to back home. From the technology to the protocols, everything felt new. But with the support of my colleagues and supervisors, I quickly adapted. One thing that struck me immediately was the inclusiveness of the workplace. People genuinely value your input, and everyone works as a team, which makes even the most stressful days manageable.

Living in Ōtara-Papatoetoe, a place affectionately known as New Zealand’s Little India, has been such a comfort. It’s like having a piece of home right here. I can find all my favourite ingredients at local Indian grocery stores, and there are plenty of restaurants where I can enjoy authentic dosas and biryanis when I don’t feel like cooking. There’s also a gated community here, with cultural events and festivals that make me feel connected to my roots.

However, I’ve also grown to love and appreciate the Kiwi way of life. Auckland is such a lively city, and there’s always something to do. One of my favourite activities is attending the Music in Parks events during the summer. There’s nothing like laying out a picnic blanket, soaking up the sun, and enjoying live music surrounded by the city’s beautiful greenery. It’s moments like these that remind me how special this city is.

When I’m not working, you’ll often find me exploring Auckland’s incredible outdoors. Nature is everywhere here, and it’s so easy to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. I’ve spent countless weekends walking along Mission Bay, enjoying the soft sand under my feet and the cool ocean breeze. The sunsets here are magical, and they’ve become my favourite way to end a busy week.

I’ve also taken to hiking in the Waitakere Ranges, which offer some of the most stunning trails through New Zealand’s native bush. My favourite spot is the Kauri Cathedral, a viewing platform surrounded by towering kauri trees that feels almost sacred. It’s amazing how rejuvenated I feel after a day spent in nature.

One of my most memorable outings was visiting the Manukau Heads Lighthouse. The views from the top were breathtaking, with rolling hills and the vast harbour stretching out before me. It’s these little adventures that make life here so fulfilling.

Auckland has taught me to appreciate the small joys in life. I’ve become a regular visitor to the Auckland Art Gallery, where I can spend hours admiring both international and local art, including works by Māori and Pasifika artists. It’s fascinating to learn about New Zealand’s cultural heritage through these exhibits.

I’ve also discovered the simple pleasure of watching outdoor movies during the summer. The Movies in Parks series is a community favourite, and I love bringing along some snacks and settling in under the stars to watch a classic film. It’s a great way to unwind and feel connected to the city’s warm and friendly vibe.

Sometimes, I also head to the Parnell Baths for a relaxing swim in the saltwater pools, or take a stroll down the bright pink cycleway in the city center, which looks especially stunning when it’s lit up at night. I also love visiting the Western Springs Park, where I am able to watch native birds or simply relax on the rolling lawns. It’s a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city and a reminder of how well Auckland blends urban life with nature.

As I complete my sixth year here, I feel grateful for everything Auckland has given me. This city has not only helped me grow as a professional but also as a person. I’ve learned to embrace a new culture while staying connected to my roots, and I’ve found a community that makes me feel at home.
