Navigating the slow pace of life in Lilongwe

Contributed By: Jayesh Desai
Lilongwe, Malawi, ZIP Code: 207205

I have called Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, my home since I was five years old. My parents originally moved to this African country in the mid-1990s for work, seeking new opportunities and experiences. Over time, they established a business here, and our family settled into the rhythm of Lilongwe’s life. We are originally from Gujarat, and our family is part of a close-knit Gujarati community in the city, that provides a sense of familiarity in the African country.

While I cherish the slower, laid-back lifestyle of Lilongwe, especially compared to the bustling cities of India, there are moments when I find myself yearning for more lively social spots.

Old Town Mall

For entertainment, I often visit the Old Town Mall, a shopping center where I enjoy browsing through various shops and indulging in local eateries. It’s a quaint place that offers a sense of familiarity, a spot where I can explore the local culture while finding comfort in the stores and restaurants that I have known since childhood.

Another favorite spot of mine is the café in the Four Season Centre, a serene garden centre of Lilongwe that is surrounded by lush greenery. I love spending time there, either alone or with my colleagues, enjoying a coffee or a meal amidst the beautiful garden setting. The café is in a complex that hosts art exhibitions and local markets, which bring a community feel and allows visitors to engage with both the local and expatriate communities in Lilongwe.

Cafe in the Four Seasons Centre

Lake Malawi is one of my go-to destinations for a quick getaway in the weekends. Though it requires a bit of travel, the change of scenery is refreshing. The lake’s beauty, local markets, and opportunities for water activities like swimming and snorkeling provide a lively environment. It’s a perfect retreat when I want to break away from the city’s routine and experience another side of Malawi.

While I don’t frequently visit the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, it’s a popular destination for family outings. On the other hand, the World War I Memorial holds more personal significance. This historic site, with its high tower offering panoramic views of Lilongwe’s cityscape, brings back memories of my school trips. Standing there, I often find myself looking out at the parliament building, the stadium, and the surrounding cityscape, reflecting on how much the city has grown and how I have, too.

Although the social scene in Lilongwe is limited, I have come to enjoy its warm and friendly atmosphere. The city’s restaurants and bars, offer a delightful mix of local and international cuisine, allowing me to explore various flavors while enjoying the city’s hospitality. Growing up in Malawi has made me well-acquainted with its people and customs, enabling me to feel a deep connection with this place that, despite its distance from Gujarat, feels very much like home.
