Enjoying Indian vibes in Durban, South Africa

Chatsworth Durban, ZIP Code: 4027

I live in Chatsworth, a suburb of the coastal city of Durban, situated in South Africa’s eastern coast. It serves as the second home for many people of Indian-origin. This affinity is so strong that Durban is frequently recognised as ‘Little India’ making it a focal point of Indian diasporic experience. The place is favourite of Indians because it was once home to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi when he was a young boy.

At Durban, the Indian community celebrates festivals with immense fervour. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, holds a special significance and holds a cherished place in my heart. I love to celebrate it here without really missing India. Other significant festivals like Eid, Navaratri, Holi, and Christmas are observed with great zeal, fostering communal harmony and facilitating cultural exchange.

Durban is also blessed with the presence of Hindu temples such as the Sri Sri Radha Radhanath Temple, the Shree Mariammen Temple, and the Shree Ambalavanaar Alayam. These temples not only serve as places of worship but also serve as hosts for various cultural and religious events throughout the year. Upon visiting these temples, one would find it hard to believe that they are not in India.
