Enjoying the relaxed lifestyle and scenic beauty of Valletta

Contributed By: Uday Mishra

Valletta, Malta, ZIP Code: 1152

I have been working as a marine surveyor in Valletta, the capital city of Malta. With about 20 percent of Malta’s population being expats, living here is quite comfortable. Valletta, though a small city with less than 10,000 residents, offers a plethora of experiences and activities that make life here incredibly enjoyable.

In my free time, I love exploring the historical and cultural sites of Valletta. The city’s rich history is visible in every corner, and the famous Grandmaster’s Palace is one of my favourite places to visit. This impressive building, which once served as the seat of power for the Order of the Knights of St. John and later as the Governor’s Palace during British rule, now houses the Office of the President. The Palace State Rooms are a stunning showcase of the city’s past, with their elaborate halls and rooms that have been expanded and embellished over the centuries.

Another serene spot I frequently visit is the Upper Barrakka Gardens. This tranquil haven offers a breathtaking view over the Grand Harbour (also known as Port of Valletta) and the Saluting Battery from where gun signals are fired daily for tourists to get a glimpse of history. It’s a perfect place to relax, enjoy a quick snack, and savour a coffee. I often indulge in pastizzi from the small kiosk there, a delightful Maltese snack that’s definitely worth trying.

For shopping, I prefer the local farmers’ markets over supermarkets. They offer fresh, local produce and provide a more authentic shopping experience. The mini markets scattered around the city are also convenient for my daily needs.

Valletta’s main shopping areas, Republic Street and Merchant Street, are perfect for leisurely strolls. These streets are lined with shops, cafes, and historic buildings, making them ideal for both shopping and sightseeing.

Living in Malta is easy without owning a car, thanks to the extensive and reliable bus system. Despite Malta’s small size, it offers a wide range of attractions and activities. From ancient historical sites to fine dining, diving, hiking, boating, and wandering through vineyards and villages, there is always something to do. The island’s beautiful, cliff-lined beaches are perfect for soaking up the sun and unwinding.

Life in Valletta is a blend of work and relaxation, enriched by the city’s wonderful culture and scenic beauty. Whether exploring historical landmarks, enjoying local delicacies, or simply soaking in the views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens, I find life here incredibly fulfilling and enjoyable.
